No Butts on the Beach

Back to Index

Inspired by my trip to Eden I have suddenly come over all ecological and wish to try and help save the planet somehow. Therefore I wasn’t too bothered by the weather this Saturday morning as ten brave souls stepped out onto Brighton’s famous naturist beach in pouring rain and blustery winds. Only four of us were naturists the others were friends and family volunteered by the organizers (Emma and Sue). Butt it was all in a good course as you might expect; we were supporting the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) “No Butts on the Beach” campaign to encourage smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly and not allow them to be washed into our rivers and seas. The idea for the “No Butts” campaign came from Richard of Surfers against Sewage (SAS). The tips of cigarettes are packed with chemicals that are poisonous to marine life (that means fish and other things that swim around in the sea) and also contain non biodegradable plastic. We were allowed to wear tops to keep warm whilst our bottoms were being skillfully painted by one and sometimes two lovely young ladies and then (on the count of three) everything came off and we posed for the world’s press (well ok, one or two local photographers). There was a break in the cloud and so it was a fraction warmer for a while, my only problem was when the “shoes off” request came (didn’t this happen last week?) and I had to stand on a very hard pebbly beach for what seemed an age. We were asked to run towards the sea (with shoes) carrying the giant butt (don’t ask me why) and we all had a great time as the video man needed at least three takes of all our activities. As you would expect, those who were not naturists and were doing this for the first time seemed to really enjoy themselves so I will take my hat off to them for that. No butts.
