A Holiday in the Lake District

Back to Index

At the beginning of October this year I made my annual trip to the Lake District. This is mainly to participate in walking and other outdoor activies with a group, but there was scope for a little nudism as well. This is mainly due to the fact I stayed on my own in a small cottage, and I was able to be naked most of the time I was indoors. I also made a couple of trips to Walney Island, near Barrow, where at the north end there is a well known, but unofficial, naturist beach. Early October is not a time one can rely on getting favourable weather in the Lakes for this sort of activity. On the first visit which was more of a reconnaissance exercise, I saw one person on top of a dune, he was a local but thought it was a little on the cool side and didn't stay long. I took over his dune and spent about 30mins enjoying the sun, I didn't see any other nudists, but a few textile walkers did come along. On my second visit there was a fresh N.W wind with cloud out to sea, and as far as I am aware I was the only person in the area. I thought it might be a little on the cold side, but the wind seemed to go over the top of the dune and I was warm enough sitting there. After an hour the cloud looked rather more menacing and the threat of rain pushed me off. I dressed and started walking back to the car, however by the time I was half way back and it started raining heavily, so I bagged my clothes and just wore my trunks (as there were a few people about now). The clothes stayed dry, however I was rather cold when I reached the car. Even on the second visit I didn't get a great deal of time nude, but it was October and in anycase I enjoyed the long walk out and back to the "naturist" area. It would be a good spot to visit in the summer months. When I visited Walney I parked at Earnse point which is on the west side of the island. The parking area does extend north along the back of the beach. It is approximately 3km walk to the area of dunes used by naturists. Although I previously knew about Walney, I did send a email to a Lake District Tourist Office asking if there were any nudist beaches. My theory being if people asked about them, they might see a demand for such facilities. Their reply mentioned Walney and said that details could be found on the internet by a search with google. One quirk of the cottage was that it had a fridge freezer unit positioned in an outhouse, which was about three paces from the back door. Now a freezer in outhouse is one thing, but a fridge should be in the kitchen, or at least in the house. Most times I put shorts on to go to the fridge, as the house was in a terrace and anyone out the back could see across all of the back yards. However occasionally either early or late I just peered around the back door, checked the coast was clear and slipped across. My cottage was at the end of the terrace and tucked around a corner at the back and against a wall, was a patio table and chairs, which couldn't be seen from the other back yards. I used this a couple of times on the warmer days, slipping my shorts off once I was in position.
