Charity Clothes Collection
A few weeks ago we had a plastic bag put through our door by an organization called ELT. These claimed to be collecting clothes to sell and give in excess of £2000 each month to a Registered Charity No.1119024 called ‘Little Treasures Trust Charity. I was a little curious about the claim they were making so looked them up on the Charity Commissions web site. Some interesting facts came to light. Accounts are available for the year to 31st Jan 2008, these were submitted on 24th March 2009 and breached regulations by missing the deadline by 114 days. The figures in the accounts are somewhat enlightening as well.
The had income of £108,942 and spending was £110,888, Staff costs were £68,904 with Social Security costs on top of this of £3,027 making £71,931 for just staffing out of the £108,942 income. Looking a little further we see that £11,900 was paid for Rent, Rates and Water, Telephone bills of £7,232; Credit Card Charges of £634. Accountancy charges of £3,135, Professional Fees £1,000 plus various other expenses to make up the total
Now I almost forgot, out of the £110,888, spend, just £1,951 was made by way of Children’s donations to what the Trustees considered ‘worthy causes’, this in the full year. At the year end, they had Creditors totaling £7,359, this included £5,052 owing for Taxation and Social Security.
The stated Objectives of this ‘Charity’ are stated as being to:-
Promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of children in the UK in their Absolute Discretion.
My own thoughts, is that they managed to give just £1,951 to ‘Worthy Charities’ in the entire year, makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Perhaps this information will make others consider carefully who or which charity is worth while supporting. Those with Internet connections can of course check out information on any charity.
Sorry to be boring, but it would seem you can do more or less what you like and still be legal as long as you are a registered charity. We presume that this 'Organisation' and others may be doing much the same in different areas.
